You will be able to:

• Explain different aspects of critical thinking.
• Generate preliminary analysis points of an organization’s solutions from the perspective of logic, evidence, critique and insight.
• Document the aforementioned results in a pre-research portfolio.
• Explain the similarities and differences between the thesis statements from the diagnostic analysis with the thesis statement for IRP.
• Identify the dual purpose of IRP (critique and offer improvements).
• Compose a thesis statement for your IRP.

Review

Topic explanation: 1. Is your partners’ topic Significant—Something that matters? 2. Is your partners’ topic Solvable—Can you think of a number of solutions for the problem? 3. Is your partners’ topic Something that interests you—Do you care about it? 4. Is your partners’ topic Not too broad or Not too narrow? 5. Is your partners’ topic Something of interest to the general public—Will others care? 6. Is your partners’ topic Something that focuses on community, national or international issues—A large-scale issue? 7. Does your partners’ topic have a variety of sources that are easy to find—Not a few sources that repeat the same information? 8. Is your partners’ topic NOT argumentative—You will not be defending your side?

Organization credibility: 1. The organization’s mission statement aligns well with your research goal. 2. The organization is a reliable source of information within a given field, which is well-known, has a good reputation and supports its solutions with research. 3. The organization provides three specific solutions to the problem. 4. Its solutions are credible—based on expert information and research. 5. The organization presents rich and detailed information about the proposed solutions—researchable. 6. The proposed solutions can be criticized and improved upon—criticizable.
